Racing Stripes Installation Guide
Complete step-by-step guide for installing racing stripes on your Porsche. Learn professional techniques for alignment, application, and finishing.
Tools you will need
- Squeegee
- Heat gun
- Spray bottle
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Microfiber towels
- Masking tape
- Utility knife
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Surface Preparation
Clean the application area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. Remove any wax, polish, or contaminants. The surface must be completely clean and dry.
Pro tip: Work in a dust-free environment and avoid direct sunlight. Ideal temperature is 60-80°F (15-27°C).
- 2
Position and Align
Use masking tape to create a centerline reference. Position the stripe dry (without removing backing) to ensure proper alignment. Mark reference points.
Pro tip: Measure twice, apply once. Use the door handle, body lines, or panel gaps as alignment references.
- 3
Prepare Application Fluid
Mix 2-3 drops of soap-free dish liquid per liter of water in a spray bottle. This allows repositioning during application.
Pro tip: Don't use too much soap - it can delay adhesive bonding. A light mist is all you need.
- 4
Initial Application
Spray the surface lightly with application fluid. Carefully peel back 6 inches of liner and position the stripe. Once aligned, use squeegee to anchor in place.
Pro tip: Work from the center outward in smooth, overlapping strokes at 45-degree angle.
- 5
Squeegee Application
Progressively peel back liner while squeegeeing the vinyl onto the surface. Use firm, consistent pressure. Work in 6-12 inch sections.
Pro tip: If bubbles appear, lift the vinyl slightly and re-squeegee. Small bubbles will disappear in 24-48 hours.
- 6
Heat Application for Curves
Use heat gun on low setting for any curved areas. Apply heat while stretching vinyl gently around contours. Never overheat (max 200°F/93°C).
Pro tip: Keep heat gun moving constantly to avoid concentrating heat in one spot. Heat makes vinyl more pliable and helps it conform.
- 7
Edge Sealing
Once fully applied, use heat gun and squeegee to seal all edges. Apply firm pressure to ensure strong adhesion at seams.
Pro tip: Wrap edges around whenever possible for the most durable installation.
- 8
Final Inspection and Care
Remove application tape slowly at a 180-degree angle. Inspect for any bubbles or lifting edges. Post-heat if necessary. Avoid washing for 48 hours.
Pro tip: Any remaining small bubbles can be punctured with a pin and smoothed out. They often disappear on their own within 48 hours.
