Hood Graphics Installation - Step by Step

Hood & Roof About 50 min Level 3/5 6 steps

Learn how to install hood graphics with precision. Covers alignment techniques, bubble removal, and achieving professional results on large flat surfaces.

Tools you will need

  • Large squeegee
  • Heat gun
  • Application solution
  • Measuring tape
  • Masking tape
  • Utility knife
  • Isopropyl alcohol

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Hood Preparation

Clean hood thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. Work in sections, wiping dry immediately. Ensure surface is cool to touch and free of any contaminants.

Pro tip: Work indoors or in shade. Direct sunlight can heat the hood, causing premature adhesive activation.

  2. 2

    Centerline Alignment

Use masking tape to create a centerline down the hood. This will be your primary alignment reference. Measure from hood edges to ensure it's perfectly centered.

Pro tip: The hood shut line or emblem position makes an excellent alignment reference point.

  3. 3

    Position the Graphic

With help if possible, position the graphic (backing still on) aligned with your centerline. Use small pieces of masking tape to hold in position.

Pro tip: Large graphics need two people for best results. One person holds tension while the other squeegees.

  4. 4

    Application Using Hinge Method

Apply horizontal tape across the middle to create a hinge. Fold top half back, remove liner from that section. Spray hood lightly and apply while squeegeeing from hinge upward.

Pro tip: Start with light pressure and increase as you work toward edges. This prevents adhesive from bonding too quickly.

  5. 5

    Complete Second Half

Remove hinge tape and fold back bottom half. Remove remaining liner, spray surface, and squeegee from center toward hood's front edge.

Pro tip: Pay special attention to the front hood edge - this area sees the most airflow and needs extra adhesion.

  6. 6

    Final Heat and Edge Seal

Apply heat to all edges, especially around hood contours. Use squeegee with firm pressure to seal edges completely. Remove any air pockets.

Pro tip: Run your finger along all edges after heating - you should not be able to lift any edge of the vinyl.
