Roof Graphics - Large Format Application

Hood & Roof About 65 min Level 4/5 6 steps

Professional techniques for installing roof graphics on Porsche vehicles. Covers panel prep, alignment strategies, and dealing with complex roof lines.

Tools you will need

  • Large squeegee
  • Heat gun
  • Spray bottle
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Masking tape
  • Utility knife
  • Step ladder

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Roof Panel Cleaning

Clean entire roof panel including sunroof edges, antenna base, and rain gutters. Remove any wax or sealants. Dry thoroughly.

Pro tip: Use a step ladder or stool for comfortable reach. Never lean across the roof, as you may drag contaminants.

  2. 2

    Alignment Reference Lines

Use masking tape to create centerline from windshield to rear window. Measure equal distances from roof edges to ensure centered placement.

Pro tip: The roof panel seam or sunroof edges make excellent alignment references.

  3. 3

    Two-Person Application

Roof graphics require two people. One person holds the graphic in position while the other applies. Use the hinge method for large graphics.

Pro tip: Communicate clearly with your helper. Establish hand signals before starting since you'll be on opposite sides of the vehicle.

  4. 4

    Progressive Application

Starting from the centerline, squeegee outward toward roof edges. Work in 12-inch sections, maintaining even pressure throughout.

Pro tip: Roof graphics are visible from above, so bubbles are more noticeable. Take your time to squeegee thoroughly.

  5. 5

    Complex Contour Work

Use heat generously on roof curves and transitions. The roof has subtle compound curves that require vinyl to stretch slightly. Heat makes this possible.

Pro tip: Heat to 150-180°F for curves. The vinyl should be warm and pliable but not hot enough to distort.

  6. 6

    Edge Trimming and Sealing

Trim excess vinyl along roof edges using a sharp knife. Apply final post-heat to all edges and seams for maximum adhesion.

Pro tip: Leave 1-2mm overhang on edges if possible, then wrap and tuck using heat and pressure.
