New to vinyl? Start here. This guide covers everything from tools you need to your first successful install.
Tools you will need
- Squeegee
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Microfibre cloths
- Masking tape
- Heat gun or hairdryer
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Gather Your Tools
You'll need a squeegee (hard felt edge), isopropyl alcohol spray, several clean microfibre cloths, masking tape, and a heat gun or hairdryer.
Pro tip: A plastic squeegee with a felt edge gives the best results without scratching the vinyl.
- 2
Prepare the Surface
Wash the panel with car shampoo, rinse and dry thoroughly. Then wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre cloth to remove all wax and grease.
Pro tip: Even brand-new cars have manufacturing release agents on the paint — always degrease before applying.
- 3
Dry Fit the Graphic
Before removing any backing paper, hold the graphic in position and check the alignment carefully. Use masking tape along the top edge as a hinge.
Pro tip: Take a photo once you're happy with the position — you can reference it during the actual application.
- 4
Peel and Apply
Fold the graphic back on itself, peel away the backing paper, then lower it onto the surface. Work from the hinge end outward.
Pro tip: Don't rush — lower the vinyl slowly and let it settle before squeegeeing.
- 5
Squeegee Out Bubbles
Using firm overlapping strokes, work from the centre outward in all directions. Overlap each stroke by 50%.
Pro tip: Small bubbles left after squeegeeing will usually disappear within 48 hours as the adhesive warms up.
- 6
Remove the Transfer Tape
Peel the transfer tape back at a low 30-degree angle. If the vinyl lifts, press it back down and use gentle heat before trying again.
Pro tip: Warming the transfer tape with a heat gun for 5 seconds makes it peel cleanly every time.
